New principals will take the helm at HES, Bromfield middle school

Superintendent Linda Dwight has chosen the two new principals who will be joining the Harvard schools’ leadership team as of July 1. Stephen Greene will hold the newly created position of middle school principal for grades 6 through 8 at the Bromfield School. And Rebecca Katsh-Singer will become principal of Hildreth Elementary School.

Dwight announced the selection of Greene and Katsh-Singer at Monday’s School Committee meeting. In a letter to the school community Tuesday, she wrote, “Each one brings strengths that will contribute to the ongoing success of our district and lead us into the next decade of growth.”

Lowell principal will lead middle school at Bromfield

For the past two years, Greene has been principal of the Lowell Community Charter Public School. He was assistant principal at the same school for a year before stepping up to the principalship. He is also pursuing a Ph.D. in education leadership at Lesley University, and he expects to complete the degree this fall.

After majoring in history at Dartmouth, Greene began his career in education as social studies department chair at 100 Academy of Excellence, a charter school in Nevada. While there, he earned a master’s degree in education at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. He returned to New England in 2015 to take a position at Excel Academy in Orient Heights.

From mid-2016 through 2017, Greene was dean of students at two KIPP public charter schools, first in Mattapan and then in Lynn. (KIPP, which stands for Knowledge Is Power Program, is the country’s largest network of charter schools, and it focuses on low-income communities.) Greene also spent more than a year as a sales and marketing leader with Panorama Education, a company that supplies data management programs to schools.

At the Bromfield School, Greene will be working with the new high school principal for grades 9 through 12, Kimberly Murphy, who will take over from retiring Principal Scott Hoffman as of July 1.

Science educator will be HES principal

At Hildreth Elementary School, Katsh-Singer will replace Josh Myler. Myler is leaving to teach woodworking with special education students. Katsh-Singer is currently science curriculum coordinator in the Westborough Public Schools, a position she has held since 2016 when she completed her Ph.D. in mathematics, science, and technology education at Boston College.

Katsh-Singer served as interim principal in Westborough last year during the principal’s maternity leave. She has also taught education classes for the past several years at Brandeis, where she received her undergraduate degree.

After starting her teaching career at elementary schools in Marblehead and Lincoln, Katsh-Singer spent four years as an instructional coach and teacher in Denver, Colorado. She returned to the Boston area in 2010 and soon began work on her doctorate. Dwight has said Katsh-Singer will be involved in the search to fill the administrative position that remains open—associate principal for HES.
