Undaunted by losses, Bromfield swimmers look ahead to regional and state championships

Despite the boys (0-3) eighth-place standing and the girls (0-2-1) seventh place in the 10-school Midland Wachusett League, Bromfield’s swimmers have their eyes set on the league and state meets that lie ahead. Team standing matters, but for the individual athlete, qualifying for an end-of-season championship race matters as much or more.

Coach James Thomas is optimistic. “So far, we are working hard and making progress,” he wrote to the Press in an email. “We have a lot of swimmers going to the Mid-Wach League meet in four weeks and looking to add more.”

The coming weeks are the busiest part of the season, Thomas said. The team is scheduled to compete in six dual meets followed by the Mid-Wach League meet on Jan. 29. The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association central/west sectional meet will be held Feb. 6 and the state championship Feb.15.

Swimmers Bowen Clarke and Eliana Laham have already qualified for the states, followed by several teammates who have qualified for the league and sectional meets. Laham will compete in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke and Clarke in the 500-yard freestyle.

“All in all I am very happy with the progress everyone is making,” wrote Thomas. “Hopefully we are over everyone getting sick and can focus on training hard the next few weeks. I am looking forward to seeing what we can accomplish as a team in the next four weeks.”
