The Bromfield track and field teams faced Lunenburg High School under less-than-ideal weather conditions April 1 for the second meet of the season. The boys claimed another win, 53-38, while the girls team was defeated 57-34.
Temperatures at the Lunenburg track were in the upper 30s, and wind and intermittent snow made for a chilly afternoon, but the teams persevered. “We had some good performances given the weather,” Coach Greg Bourque wrote in an email to the Press, “but it was a difficult day to run.”
Both the girls and the boys teams were coming off wins at the previous week’s meet against Ayer Shirley Regional High School.
On the girls side, each team won a relay and Bromfield took first in three of nine individual events. The 4x400-meter relay team took first in 4 minutes, 47.3 seconds, while the 4x200 relay (2:05.8) fell to Lunenburg by less than a second.
In the 300-meter, senior Claire Stoddard was first in 47.18, and senior Marley Ferguson won the 600 in 1:58.2. On the field, sophomore Molly Squire had the top mark in the shot put, throwing 29 feet, 11.75 inches. She was also second in the mile in 5:56.4.
Bromfield lost a few points in the 55-meter hurdles, the only event in which the team had no entries.
The boys had a successful day, winning both relays and five individual events and showing off impressive depth in the 55-meter dash.
The 4x200 relay team was first in 1:48.2. The 4x400 relay team claimed another win, running 4:15.8.
In the 55-meter dash, Bromfield swept up first through fourth places, with senior Jordan Colon leading the field in 6.7. He was followed closely by senior Cole O’Neil (6.8) and freshman Colin Harte (6.9). Junior Jacob Pulido was fourth in 7.3.
In the 55-meter hurdles, Liam Morrison was first in 8.9 seconds. Sophomore Sam Secor (1:39.2) and senior Jack Yu (1:39.6) were first and second in the 600 hurdle.
On the field, senior Nathan Woolcock had the top mark in both the shot put (36 feet, 4.25 inches) and the high jump (5 feet, 2 inches). Yu was second in the shot put, throwing 32 feet, 9.5 inches.
Bromfield has two competitions remaining in the four-meet season and races again April 8 against the Francis W. Parker Charter Essential School.
