Stephen Hou, age 94, died peacefully Oct. 22, 2021, with his family by his side.
Stephen was born Feb. 19, 1927, near Guilin, in Guangxi province, China. He would fondly recall traveling with his father to mind the family’s tailoring and retail businesses. He was a former missionary and seminary student, and was headmaster of a private school in Hong Kong. He is remembered fondly by his children as a prolific reader and letter-writer, and for listening to Chinese opera for diversion. He also enjoyed playing the piano and carrying tunes on his harmonica. He was meticulous in his Chinese calligraphy and as an amateur photographer. He was an active member of the Boston Chinese Evangelical Church of Boston and Newton.
Stephen was predeceased by his sister Sau Ying and grandson Brandon. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lois, his children and their spouses, Diana and James Harte, Paul and Jannet Hou, and Carolyn and Dennis Lee; six grandchildren, Jocelyn, Kimberly, Alexandra, Brianna, Samantha, and Colin; and nieces and nephews, Grace, KC, Joshua, and Rachel.
A visitation and service was held Saturday, Oct. 30, at the Memorial Chapel in Newton Cemetery & Arboretum. A procession and burial followed. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Stephen’s memory may be made to Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org) or the Boston Chinese Evangelical Church.
