Margaret E. “Betty” Madigan, 93, of Groton, formerly of Harvard, died June 6, 2022, at her home following a lengthy illness.

Betty was born in Dorchester, Sept. 25, 1928, the daughter of Thomas M. and Elizabeth (Hanley) Curley, and graduated from the Bromfield School, Class of 1945.

She was raised in Dorchester until her family moved out of the city to the town of Harvard. It was here she met Jack, raised her family, and established lifelong friendships. It was also here where her support, commitment, and sacrifice were integral to the establishment of J.C. Madigan Inc. and Madigan Lime Corporation, the family businesses led by Jack and their sons.

Betty was a domestic goddess and could create meals from nothing, clothes without patterns—and she ironed a mean set of sheets. She loved her dogs and her gardens and put in hours alongside Jack, mowing lawns, delivering vehicles, and running her Kubota. She was always available to watch her grandkids and made those visits a special world of tea parties, coloring, and walks down Shaker Road to learn about nature.

In 2007, along with her husband Jack, she created the Madigan Family Foundation to support the communities in which we live by providing support to local schools, youth organizations, food pantries, and shelters.

Betty is survived by her son Timothy and his wife, Eileen Madigan, and their children Maggie, Thomas, and Molly of Groton; her daughter-in-law Patricia Madigan and her children Jessica, Jennifer, and John Madigan IV of Groton; and her son-in-law Paul Lindquist of Dover.

Betty was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, John C. “Jack” Madigan Jr.; her daughter Phyllis A. Madigan and her son John C. Madigan III; and her siblings Joseph, William, Bernie, Mary, Helen, and Paul.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at a later date to be communicated directly by the family. Memorial contributions may be made to the Madigan Family Foundation, 450 Old Union Turnpike, Lancaster, MA 01523.
