Fitchburg Art Museum reopens free to the public beginning July 22

Press release submittted by The Fitchburg Art Museum

The Fitchburg Art Museum (FAM) is excited to be welcoming guests back into the galleries beginning on July 22, 2020 with free admission for all through September 6.

Museum Director Nick Capasso hopes that the Museum can serve as a place of respite and reflection for the greater community during this time. Capasso notes:

“The last few months have been exceptionally difficult and stressful. Here at FAM, we have been working to create a clean, safe, and welcoming place. Our galleries are here for you to enjoy – to seek comfort, solace, beauty, and the personal transformation that art can effect.”

This summer guests will be able to explore After Spiritualism: Loss and Transcendence in Contemporary Art at the Museum. The special exhibition reflects on personal and shared losses, and ways of moving beyond them, through the work of fifteen contemporary artists. “The show could not be more timely, relevant, and therapeutic,” notes Capasso. After Spiritualism is complemented by Jo Sandman: The Photographic Work a photo display which explores the tensions between the material and spiritual.

Also browse wonderful works of American, Ancient Egyptian, and African Art on view as part of Fitchburg Art Museum’s collection. FAM’s focus exhibition Scenes in Circulation: Winslow Homer’s America is a visitor favorite and features forty-six recently acquired wood engravings from the mid-19th century’s “Golden Age of Illustration.”

Explore arts and culture in North Central, Massachusetts. Make a day trip of your visit by packing a picnic to enjoy in the Museum’s outdoor courtyard and visit downtown Fitchburg to explore the city’s public art from the monuments of Hebert Adams to murals by local artists on display at the outdoor community space Activate Mill Street.

Fitchburg Art Museum’s goal is for visitors to stay well and inspired. The Museum has increased cleaning and sanitation across all buildings and has reduced Museum capacity to fifty visitors. FAM has also implemented a new mask requirement and social distancing protocols to protect all guests. Fitchburg Art Museum will reopen in complete compliance with Governor Baker’s requirements for Phase 3 Reopening for museums. A full list of safety guidelines are available on our website at:

The Museum staff looks forward to greeting you for your visit!
