Press release submitted by Community Harvest Project

Community Harvest Project is expanding its work to support healthy hunger relief in Central Massachusetts. The Community Harvest Project engages thousands of volunteers to grow fresh fruit and vegetables on their farm to provide healthy hunger relief to over 400,000 people living in food-insecurity across Worcester County each year. The charitable arm of People’s United Bank, People’s United Community Foundation, has made a $6,500 donation to support the program. The funding will support the expansion of the Volunteer Farming Program to serve Worcester County.

The Volunteer Farming Program provides families in need with healthy food options. The program hosts over 7,500 volunteers each year to help grow over 200,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables that is donated to local hunger relief and serves over 413,000 people in need. Expanding the Volunteer Farming Program will allow for continued education for current and future volunteers to help lower the effects of limited access to healthy foods leading to poor health.

“We are excited for the expansion to our Volunteer Farming Program thanks to People’s United Community Foundation,” said Tori Buerschaper, Executive Director. “With their support we will be able to grow and donate even more fruits and vegetables to provide healthy food options to our community members.”

“Engaging and educating volunteers to grow fresh fruits and vegetables for hunger relief is Community Harvest Project’s mission, and we are proud to support the expansion of their volunteer program to continue to educate and provide healthy food to their community,” said Patrick Sullivan, Massachusetts President, EVP of People’s United Bank and Officer of the Foundation.

People’s United Community Foundation and Community Harvest Project are celebrating a 10-year partnership. Since 2012, People’s United Community Foundation has awarded Community Harvest a total of $51,500 in grants in support of its mission, including the Volunteer Farming program, education, hunger relief and agriculture improvements, and fighting COVID-19’s community impact.

Since the beginning of the COVID-10 pandemic, the Community Harvest Project community, staff, and volunteers continued to farm, harvest and donate food to those in need. Massachusetts has seen the largest increase in hunger in the country, with 1 in 8 individuals in the community depending on emergency food services.

Community Harvest Project stands as the largest community farm in Massachusetts, with a 19-year track record of success. In 2021, the organization received certification as a Points of Light Service Enterprise, joining the top 11% of nonprofits nationwide in volunteer management and organizational performance. The certification recognizes the organization’s ability to use volunteer power to transform its work and achieve more in the community.
