Last Friday, state education officials canceled the spring MCAS exams, the standardized assessment testing given to students in grades 3 through 10 in Massachusetts public and charter schools. State education officials must also waive or modify the MCAS-measured competency requirements for this year's graduating high school seniors. The toll of the virus in Massachusetts continues to rise. The Department of Public Health reported Thursday, April 9, that the number of deaths in the Commonwealth due to COVID-19 had increased to  503, while the number of confirmed cases had risen to 18,941.  DPH reported that Worcester County had 1,461 cases, while neighboring Middlesex County had 4,045. The number of state residents who had been tested for the virus was 94,958.

FinCom recommends that schools absorb deficit if voters reject Prop 2½ override

Harvard’s fiscal 2021 budget includes a $317,239 Proposition 2½ override. The budget won’t balance without its passage. But Town Administrator Tim Bragan and others worry that voters will not approve the measure, and they have been calling for a “Plan B” that describes the specific cuts that would be made to departmental budgets to make up the difference.

Fire Chief Rick Sicard, leader of Harvard’s emergency management team, reported Thursday afternoon that at least one Harvard resident has tested positive for the infection. “We are seeing a steady increase in the number of reported cases and deaths nationally and in state,” he explained in an email. “Consistent with this, we have confirmed cases in Harvard.”

State of the Town: Latest news of COVID-19 closings, cancellations, and postponements

The Department of Public Health reported April 1 the number of deaths due to COVID-19 in Massachusetts had jumped from 89 to 122, while the number of confirmed cases in the state increased by 1,118 to 7,738.   Worcester County was reported to have 563 cases, while neighboring Middlesex County had 1,582. The number of cases in Harvard is unknown

The Department of Public Health reported March 31 that as of 4 p.m., the number of deaths due to COVID-19 in Massachusetts had jumped 59% in the past 24 hours, from 56 to 89, while the number of confirmed cases in the state increased by nearly 868 to 6,620. No confirmed cases or deaths have been reported by the Harvard Board of Health. Gov. Charlie Baker said yesterday that health experts expect a surge in cases to come between April 7 and 17.

The  number of COVID-19 cases and deaths in Massachusetts grew again Monday. The Department of Public Health reported March 30 that as of 4 p.m., the number of deaths due to COVID-19 in Massachusetts has grown from 48 to 56 in the past 24 hours, while the number of confirmed cases in the state increased by nearly 800 to 5,752. No confirmed cases or deaths have been reported by the Harvard Board of Health. In an afternoon press conference today, Gov. Charlie Baker said health experts expected a surge in cases would come between April 7 and 17.

The  number of COVID-19 cases and deaths continued to grow in Massachusetts. The Department of Public Health reported Sunday that as of 4 p.m., the number of deaths due to COVID-19 in Massachusetts has grown from 44 to 48 in the past 24 hours, while the number of confirmed cases in the state increased by nearly 700 to 4,955. No confirmed cases or deaths have been reported by the Harvard Board of Health. The Select Board met today for the first time since declaring a state of emergency on March 17 to discuss the decision to close the town’s parks, beach, Common, and McCurdy Track. The meeting was virtual, with Fire Chief Rick Sicard, who chairs Harvard’s emergency management team, and Police Chief Ed Denmark, the assistant chair, and all five members of the board present via the internet.

Today Gov. Charlie Baker announced that all public and private Massachusetts schools as well as all non-emergency day care centers will remain closed until Monday, May 4.

The additional restrictions announced by Gov. Charlie Baker at yesterday’s March 23 briefing took effect today. All non-essential businesses were required to close by noon, and residents were advised —but not ordered—to stay at home and avoid “all unnecessary activities.” Baker’s orders also banned gatherings of more than 10 people, down from the previous maximum of 25.
