Last Friday, state education officials canceled the spring MCAS exams, the standardized assessment testing given to students in grades 3 through 10 in Massachusetts public and charter schools. State education officials must also waive or modify the MCAS-measured competency requirements for this year's graduating high school seniors. The toll of the virus in Massachusetts continues to rise. The Department of Public Health reported Thursday, April 9, that the number of deaths in the Commonwealth due to COVID-19 had increased to  503, while the number of confirmed cases had risen to 18,941.  DPH reported that Worcester County had 1,461 cases, while neighboring Middlesex County had 4,045. The number of state residents who had been tested for the virus was 94,958.

FinCom recommends that schools absorb deficit if voters reject Prop 2½ override

Harvard’s fiscal 2021 budget includes a $317,239 Proposition 2½ override. The budget won’t balance without its passage. But Town Administrator Tim Bragan and others worry that voters will not approve the measure, and they have been calling for a “Plan B” that describes the specific cuts that would be made to departmental budgets to make up the difference.

The toll of the virus continues to rise. According to the Department of Public Health, as of April 8, the number of deaths in Massachusetts due to COVID-19 has increased to  433, while the number of confirmed cases in the state rose to 16,790.  DPH reported that Worcester County had 1,296 cases. Residents are urged to watch the nine-minute video (https://bit.ly/2ULQYdB) released Sunday by Harvard’s Emergency Management Team.

This week has seen two interruptions to Harvard’s annual rites of spring. The fifth annual town cleanup and garlic mustard pull has been cancelled. And Spring Town Meeting has been moved from May 2 to Saturday, June 20. In an effort to ease the financial hardship some residents may be experiencing due to loss of business or a paycheck, Town Administrator Tim Bragan announced today the town will extend the due date of 2020 real estate and personal property tax bills to June 1, 2020.

It’s official. COVID-19 has come to Harvard. Fire Chief Rick Sicard, leader of Harvard’s emergency management team, reported Thursday afternoon that at least one Harvard resident has tested positive for the infection. “We are seeing a steady increase in the number of reported cases and deaths nationally and in state,” he explained in an email. “Consistent with this, we have confirmed cases in Harvard.”
