Relay finish clinches win for girls while boys handily defeat Gardner

The Bromfield boys and girls indoor track teams both won their meets against Gardner on Wednesday, Jan. 18, at the Fitchburg High School indoor track.

The Bromfield boys defeated Gardner by a score of 66-25, with victories in all running events.

"It was an extremely successful meet," said boys coach David Boisvert. "Everyone ran exceptionally well."

In the 55-meter high hurdles, Bromfield junior Glenn Steranka, sophomore Jake Valladares, and junior Sam Beebe placed in the top three with times of 9 seconds, 9.8 seconds, and 10.3 seconds, respectively.

The 55-meter dash was dominated by junior Roniel Foster, who ran to first place with a time of 7.2 seconds, followed closely by Beebe, who placed third with a time of 7.5 seconds.

Junior Dan Colony sprinted to first in the 300-meter with a time of 40.6 seconds.

Junior Patrick Griffin took first in the 600-meter with a time of 1 minute, 35.9 seconds.

"Patrick just joined in on the fun," Boisvert said. "He recently decided to run indoor track this year, and I'm sure by the hard way he works in practices that he is enjoying every minute of it."

In the 1000-meter, sophomore Paul Malloy and freshman Price Day ran to first and second with times of 3 minutes, 0.7 seconds and 3 minutes, 4.9 seconds, respectively.

Similarly, seniors Nick Kronauer and Ellis Toll ran the 1-mile to first and second with times of 4 minutes, 57.8 seconds, and 4 minutes, 59.6 seconds.

Day placed first in the 2-mile with a time of 11 minutes, 7.3 seconds with freshman Matt Polimou placing third with a time of 12 minutes, 2.0 seconds.

The field events also fell in favor of the Trojans as both Steranka and Valladares placed first in the high jump with a height of 5 feet. The only event that Bromfield lost was the shot put, where junior John Hubert placed third with a distance of 29 feet, 8.25 inches.

The Trojans also won both the 4x200-meter relay and the 4x400-meter relay with times of 1 minute, 51.3 seconds and 4 minutes, 6.5 seconds, respectively.

The competition for the girls team was much fiercer, as the score was tied at 43-43 until the 4x400-meter relay, when Bromfield sophomore Alexia Lipman outsprinted her opponent in the last leg of the relay for a 48-43 victory.

Other first place performances were made by junior Moriah Arnold on the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.4 seconds; Lipman on the 600-meter with a time of 1 minute, 50.1 seconds; and junior Caroline Turnbull on the high jump with a height of 4 feet, 10 inches.

"We had some amazing performances in the meet, with several girls doing extra duty to pull off this victory," said girls coach Ray Dunn. "Alexia Lipman ran a sensational finish in the 4x400 to win the meet for us."
