Civilized debate helps shape Harvard’s future

Tuesday night townspeople demonstrated their ability to sort out a complicated issue before them at Special Town Meeting, and ultimately voted to adopt the Stretch Energy Code. In the weeks leading up to the Special Town Meeting, emotions ran high, as evidenced by the letters to the editor we received. But Tuesday Harvard voters joined together and displayed a willingness to engage in strong public debate, searching for what was right for the town. There were sincere and thoughtful considerations presented on both sides of the issue. And we hope that the call for respect and civility will be answered by thoughtful debate from all sides, with room for all voices to be heard, when next Harvard grapples with complex questions that could help define our future.
