People were excited about Evergreen Solar when it first arrived on the scene at Devens. It was new commerce that would bring in jobs and revenue, and was part of the "green" industry touted by Governor Deval Patrick as being key to the economic future of Massachusetts. But the thrumming sound emanating from the facility has soured people on the company. People are losing sleep; animals are acting strangely. This week, after receiving a letter of enforcement from the Devens Enterprise Commission, the company issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to being a good neighbor and promising to rectify the problem. We hope they’re as good as their word. People should not have to wear ear plugs in their own homes to block out the sounds made by nearby businesses.
