People on both sides of the issue that will be before voters at Tuesday’s Special Town Meeting have presented their arguments with passion in the pages of this newspaper. Adoption of the proposed Stretch Energy Code, a requirement for a town’s designation as a Green Community, has sparked a vigorous debate, not only about the merits of the code itself, but also about what the code represents to some—an infringement on people’s freedom.
Tuesday, voters will have an opportunity to present their arguments live, before their fellow citizens, to engage in a discourse about the merits of the article under consideration, and, ultimately, to vote on it. This is democracy at work. As citizens of a democracy, we owe it to ourselves, to our children, and to those who won our freedoms for us to keep it working by participating in it. Don’t let others make choices for you. We urge voters to go to Town Meeting, let their voices be heard, let the voices of others be heard, and cast their votes for the future they want.
