We’re pleased to see so many letters from readers this week, and hope to see more next week. Just to avoid any appearance of favoritism or bias, we’re running candidate support letters in alphabetical order by author. And since next week’s paper will be the last one before Town Meeting and the elections, we won’t run any letters that attack candidates or allege motives or behavior that can’t be verified. For that issue we subscribe to the Thumper rule of communication: “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.”
When we started the Press last fall, one of our early decisions was an editorial policy not to endorse candidates. While we believe that choosing town officials is often the most important decision voters make, we think the paper should restrict itself to shedding light on issues and candidate positions, and trust the wisdom of informed voters to make wise choices.
