Since 1973 the Harvard Conservation Trust has worked to preserve land in Harvard so residents can enjoy open space and nature even as the town grows. Through purchases, conservation restrictions, and other transactions, the trust saved fields, forests, and wetlands and added the first affordable housing to town—the Inn and Great Elms. Trustee Dennis Delaney explains (page 12) how certain tax advantages for conservation restrictions expire in December. We hope that anyone considering land preservation reads this article and takes action. And we hope that more land is added to the town’s open space, and more dollars added to the pockets of residents wise and generous enough to take advantage before the sun sets on the opportunity.
