The Press deeply regrets its editorial last week, which said voters were told that they would be responsible for one fixed number and not a dollar more for the new library. That commitment was made—and kept—by the Library Building Committee and referred to building costs, not operating costs. In fact, the Finance Committee told voters at the 2004 Annual Town Meeting, “The town should be aware that an override will be required when the new library opens to fund an increase in operating costs and staff needed for the larger facility.” It couldn’t have been much clearer. Its estimate in March 2004 was “approximately $140,000” in increased operating costs.
We are especially sorry that the confusion was about the new library, which has been a model of excellent planning, communication, and execution. We know most of the people working on the project and know of their integrity, vision, and commitment to the town and the library.
