We will miss Paul Cohen as Town Administrator. From a reporter’s perspective, he was always available to answer questions, to provide budget back-up material, to give insight into local and Massachusetts laws and regulations. From a meeting attendee’s perspective, he kept the Board of Selectmen on track by providing it everything necessary to conduct its business, by proposing compromises when discussion deteriorated into discord, by reporting succinctly his list of updates at the end of each board meeting. From a taxpayer’s perspective, he was worth the salary the selectmen took so much grief for five years ago. He increased the level of detail in financial reporting from the schools and the town and drove changes to allow the boards—and taxpayers—to compare year-to-year spending. We pay lots of taxes here, and it’s nice to know where our money is going. He managed our town, and took on the added responsibility of Devens as the disposition process unfolded, with patience and professionalism. We wish him all the best in his new job—and look forward to seeing him around town as a neighbor.
