One of the town committees that desperately needs volunteers is the Transfer Station Committee. As we reported several weeks ago, the committee is now down to one member, with a few hard-working recycling volunteers to help out on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Recycling saves the town money that’s needed elsewhere and keeps trash out of landfills; see the photo below for an example of trash that could easily have been recycled. A committee with more members and a broader volunteer base could help Department of Public Works Director Rich Nota identify and execute creative ways to increase recycling through processes used at the transfer station and through educating residents about the benefits of recycling. Programs with the schools could train budding young citizens to think about the trash they create and how to reduce, reuse, or recycle it. Everyone is busy, we know. It’s all a matter of priorities.
