Recent news reports about wildfires in California and drought in the South remind us again that here in New England our weather may not be perfect, but it doesn’t usually turn on us like a rabid dog. Soon enough, we’ll dig out the scarves and mittens and put on the boots and hunker down for the long haul until March, when once in awhile a sign of spring will appear if we’re lucky. In the meantime, there will be snow, and skiing, skating on the pond, and sledding on the Common. There will also be ice, and sleet, treacherous driving, and maybe even a power outage or two. But the odds are good that we won’t be driven from our homes and forced to take shelter in the high school. And we probably won’t appear on CNN, waiting for help from FEMA. Sure, there will be days ahead when we’ll yearn to be in sunny Florida, but right now, from where we sit, it looks like we have the best end of the bargain.
