It was troubling this week how many townspeople were unwilling to be quoted in our small “man-on-the-street” survey about the failed Proposition 2½ override. There are good reasons to remain anonymous in a small town facing big conflict, but how sad it is that our friends and neighbors seem afraid that they or their children could suffer if their opinions about the override were known. If that’s the case, though, we hope that all townspeople will feel good about taking part in the town-wide survey co-sponsored by this newspaper and the League of Women Voters. It’s crucial that town officials get more information about what the voters think—not just their own supporters’ opinions, but a broad sample that would be more helpful as a new financial plan takes shape.
