School Committee, 6/22/09

Financial picture looks stable

Schools Superintendent Thomas Jefferson told the School Committee that the schools are meeting their targets for spending reductions. He also reported that his conversations with state officials indicate that next year’s cuts in state aid will most likely be offset by increases in federal dollars under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

Bromfield in line for additional funds

The use of federal grant money to pay for Smart Boards at the elementary school will mean that fewer funds are available for technology improvements at the secondary level, Jefferson explained. To redress the balance, any additional grant or trust money that becomes available will go to the Bromfield School.

Members focus on direction, emphasis, scope of goals

Member Virginia Justicz noted that the committee should keep the strategic plan “front and center” in their planning to stay on target in the coming year. Jefferson expressed the hope that the committee would draw up goals “from the perspective of the students,” whom he called “the most important component” in the process.

Member Piali De wanted to see district-wide goals that are separate from those for the committee. Member Stu Sklar said, “We have a financially stressed school system,” and argued that funding should be addressed in any new goals.

Donations made for equipment and programs

The committee noted that the Bromfield Athletic Club has donated $695 for weight-room equipment; the Harvard Parent-Teacher Organization gave approximately $950 to support HES Field Day and Scientist Day; and an anonymous donor gave $1,000 to the Bromfield Invent Team.
