Let’s go to the movies
The movie at Volunteers Hall on Monday, Jan. 23, at 1 p.m., will be “Moneyball.”
Based on a true story, Brad Pitt stars as Billy Beane, the general manager of the Oakland A’s who defies conventional wisdom and outsmarts his competition when forced to reinvent his team with bargain players.

- Friday, Jan. 13. Originally scheduled for Nov. 3, but canceled due to the snow storm, the tour of WGBH has been rescheduled. The group will have the same itinerary, including a behind-the-scenes tour of WGBH, lunch at the Stockyard Restaurant, and a visit to the MIT Museum in Cambridge. This trip will leave Hildreth House at 9:30 a.m. and should be back by 4 p.m. Currently this trip is sold out, but the Council on Aging is taking reservations for standby should there be any cancellations. The cost is $10 plus lunch.
- Monday, Jan. 23. Did you know that there is an operating winery right here in Harvard? The Boston Globe Magazine of Nov. 6 describes a family-owned (the Holtzmans) winery producing what the Globe calls, “bliss in a glass.” It’s not quite cider, not quite apple juice, and not quite apple wine. The Holtzmans’ Apfel Eis is sweet and tart without the fire of apple spirits. The Council on Aging will tour their operation and perhaps sample a bit of the finished product. After that, the group will have lunch at the Devens Grill, completing the tour of local Harvard. This trip will leave the Hildreth House at 10:15 a.m. and return by 2:30 p.m. The cost is $10, plus lunch.
- Thursday, Feb. 2. Experience a Boston Symphony Orchestra concert-in-the-making by attending this open rehearsal at Symphony Hall in Boston. Watch the orchestra as it refines its performance. Featured selections from Strauss, Dutilleux, and Debussy. An on-stage informative talk precedes the rehearsal. Lunch follows at a nearby restaurant. The group will leave the Hildreth House at 8 a.m. and return at 3 p.m. Cost is $28, plus lunch.
