Harvard Schools Superintendent Thomas Jefferson, in a phone interview with the Press Wednesday, confirmed that Hildreth Elementary School Principal Mary Beth Banios will be leaving her position to take the job of assistant superintendent of Maynard Schools.
Jefferson said that he had “recommended Mary Beth very highly” and that the job in Maynard was a perfect fit for her, “especially in the area of curriculum instruction where this job is focused.” He added, “I am personally and professionally very delighted for her.”
Jefferson said that the search for a replacement for Banios will begin immediately. He briefed the School Committee on Monday evening after the news of Banios’ departure had been finalized over the weekend.
He said, “We’re exploring options and the timing is such that we are considering whether we want to go with an interim position or embark on a full-fledged search.” He said that he will meet with the School Committee on June 4 to explore the options, adding that “responsibility for replacement lies with the superintendent.” Jefferson anticipates that a replacement will be found before July 1, from either within the system or externally. “There are a lot of people internally that have the appropriate qualifications, and we will be looking at all our options,” he said.
Jefferson emphasized that “our goal is always to do what’s right for the kids long-term and we will make this decision with this perspective in mind.”
Banios could not be reached for comment before this article went to press.
