Featuring performers from Tokyo to Tel Aviv, the Bromfield School hosted one of Boston's most prestigious and diverse student jazz groups last week.

The Berklee College of Music Concert Jazz Orchestra performed at the Cronin Auditorium in the Bromfield School on Wednesday, Jan. 4, during Tri-M Music Honor Society's January Jazz.

A unique feature of this professional-level orchestra is that most of the pieces they perform are original student jazz compositions, fusing the cultures of the diverse performing group into a melting pot of musical talent.

Bromfield Music Director Thomas Reynolds first got the idea of having this orchestra perform at Bromfield after attending a similar event at the home of local jazz musician and Fanfare officer John Chapman.

"I spoke with Greg Hopkins, the director of the Berklee Concert Jazz Orchestra about possibly coming to Bromfield," said Reynolds. "[Hopkins] was planning on going to Louisville, Kentucky, for a national competition, so he needed some kind of a 'dress rehearsal.'"

The members of the Bromfield chapter of the Tri-M Music Honor Society organized the advertising and preparation for this event, which they dubbed January Jazz.

"We paid for the Berklee students to come out here from Boston," said junior Stacey Fair, the public relations officer of Tri-M. "Some of us arrived several hours in advance to help set up for the event, and we were even able to cover the technical aspects of the performance, including lights and sound."

The musicians in Tri-M have a duty to enrich the cultural offerings in Harvard, Reynolds said.

"Music is essentially lifelong learning," he said.

Audience members during the one-and-a-half-hour display of musical talent Wednesday night smiled, laughed, and applauded for solos that included a graceful flute and a daring baritone saxophone.

"It was really inspiring to see the high level of talent that the Berklee students brought to the school," Fair said. "I think I can safely say that all of the Tri-M members who were able to attend the concert enjoyed it."

Reynolds said he thinks it would be great if Bromfield could host a guest band every month.

"It was a respectable crowd, and I'm sure [the orchestra] would love to come back," said Reynolds. "You know, any group that is available from symphony orchestras to Caribbean ensembles would be welcome."
