Retirement Your Way
Local retirement planner Chuck Yanikoski addresses Baby Boomers who are approaching retirement but are in a “gray area: they will not starve, but they will not be able to live the life they envision, or the life they are probably living now.” Yanikoski advises such people to simplify their lives: “Sure, you’ll still miss some of the extra goodies you used to have, but you’ll also find that there are easy substitutes for almost all of them. And that these substitutes bring you at least as much pleasure, and a lot less hassle, than your pre-retirement lifestyle gave you.”

Harvard resident Jonathan Feist reminds us that it might be time to replace our smoke detectors. Ceiling-mounted electrical equipment has been a recent theme for Feist, who, a few weeks ago asked, “Why are light fixtures so awful?”
“It’s astonishing how much horrific lighting is out there. Tons and tons and tons of ersatz crapola, laughably grotesque and cheap imitations of the inane concepts from yesteryear, often marketed as ‘traditional.’”

Former Harvard Press editor Lynda King wants to know “what to have for dinner.”
“Uppermost in my mind have been the guiding principles, “Grow it yourself; make it yourself; make it from scratch.” Those principles have grown out of a desire to become less dependent on the commercial food system and to become more in control of what my family eats. Yet those are only three of the many considerations guiding my food choices today,” King writes.
