The rusty 1966 Ford Anglia that once sat in the Harvard Hillside Garage parking area has just gotten a second life. According to the car's owner, Stow Road resident Bob Douglas, the antique sat at the Hillside Garage for years, before being borrowed recently by Warner Brothers Studios for a stint in Times Square.
Douglas, who owns a working Ford Anglia, said that he had placed an online "for sale" ad for the old clunker years ago, but then decided to keep it to cannibalize for parts, should his working version need them.
"The parts are almost impossible to find," he said in a recent e-mail to the Press.
Douglas said that someone from Warner Brothers had apparently seen the old ad, and called him to see if the film studio could buy it. When they learned the car wasn't for sale, studio representatives asked to borrow it.
The Hillside crew removed the old Anglia's engine, and the display team at RaisePlowWorld redecorated the car to be exactly the same as the flying Ford Anglia from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
After its facelift, the car was lifted by crane over Times Square in New York City and set on the marquee of Discovery Times Square, where it heralds "Harry Potter, the Exhibition," due to open at the museum April 5 and run through September.
The refurb'd car will return to Harvard this fall, Douglas said.
