They know about haggis, Anna Karenina, the Battle of Gettysburg, Peter Sellers, onomatopoeia, Sir Galahad, plate tectonics, John Milton, and Neville Chamberlain. The Romantic poets—not so much. These were just a few of the topics that demanded lightning-fast answers from Bromfield students on WGBH’s High School Quiz Show.

The Bromfield School team advanced all the way to the finals on the program before falling in the last round to Longmeadow. Members of the Harvard team were Danny Eisenberg, Andrew Hong, Brett Keating, Jacky McGoldrick, Lewis Pacheco, and Rebecca Turner. Faculty advisor Michael McGarty has long guided Bromfield teams through the national on-line contest, Quiznet.

On their way to the finals, the teammates bested Nipmuc Regional, Holyoke, and East Longmeadow high schools. For their efforts, the team brought a prize of $250 back to the school, which will help to fund their participation in other competitions.

Both the semi-finals and the final round of High School Quiz Show were broadcast during the past week, although the actual contests had taken place and been recorded earlier. Participants were sworn to secrecy about the outcome until the programs aired.
