The Bromfield Drama Society will present
London Suite, by Neil Simon, for its fall production. Performances will be held Dec. 5, 6, 12, and 13 in the Cronin Auditorium.
London Suite weaves four different stories into one cohesive comedy. Each of the four scenes takes place in the same suite of a London hotel during the 1990s. The four stories include two men in a heated debate over money, an older couple traveling to London to see the Wimbledon tennis match, a daughter setting her mother up on a date, and an older female television star meeting up with her gay ex-husband.
Assistant director Becca McCourt says, “The play is very interesting because it’s not one story.”
Each scene acts as its own mini-play with separate characters and plot, all set in the same hotel room. This unique structure poses challenges for the actors because the development of their characters is condensed. Aside from this challenge, the play’s structure does have its perks. McCourt says, “Although it can be challenging, it gives the audience a variety.” The quick plot transitions keep the audience involved.
This year’s cast includes a handful of fresh faces. Twelve of the 23 cast members are making their debut in a Drama Society production.
Freshman Emma Backer-Verbitz says, “It’s a lot more intense than middle school!”
McCourt does not seem too worried about all the new actors. “They are all learning really fast,” she says. “I couldn’t be happier with how it is coming along.”
The veteran actors in the play also help guide the new actors. McCourt adds, “It has been really helpful to have more experienced actors like Connor Davy to back up the new actors. I think it’s going to be really, really good. It’s going to be modern and entertaining. The audience should really enjoy it.”
Tickets will be on sale at the door for $10 for adults and $8 for students. Curtain time is 8 p.m.
