Devens Common was rocking with great chili and live music Sunday afternoon, Oct. 11, as 19 contestants plied more than 500 attendees with their chili creations, all for the benefit of families and children affected by autism. The fifth annual Devens Charity Chili Cookoff, sponsored by the Devens Grill, had a tie for first place―Pam and Butch Bisson from Pepperell (who donated their winnings back to the cause) were first-place winners for the third year in a row, sharing first place with Michael Harmon of Ayer, who entered the cookoff for the first time. Bill Brady from Sonoma Restaurant in Princeton took home the second-place trophy.
According to Elaine Gailey, Devens Grill co-owner, the event raised more than $6,800 for the Autism Resource Center of Central Massachusetts, which is located in Worcester. In addition to donations by attendees, Gailey said that contributions were received from Health Alliance Hospital, Nashoba Valley Chamber of Commerce, East Coast Winchester Mechanical, and many local supporters who donated raffle items.
