Cub Scouts sold 1,400 plain and decorated Nova Scotia evergreen wreaths December 2. The wreath sale, a Harvard holiday tradition since the early 1960s, is the primary fundraiser for these Scouts, providing money for favorite activities such as camping, attendance at minor league football and baseball games, snow tubing, and pizza and bowling. Harvard’s 52 first- to fifth-grade Cub Scouts also participate in a variety of community service activities. They conduct an annual food drive, collect magazines and snacks to send to service members in Iraq and Afghanistan, and sponsor an annual April outdoor cleanup.
While most sales are made as a result of preorders, Cubs also offer wreaths at the transfer station the first Saturday in December. Treasurer Jan Steranka conveyed the Cubs’ appreciation for use of the Department of Public Works building to store wreaths and provide a pick-up point.
It’s too late to buy wreaths this year, but look for the Cub Scout sandwich board on the Common and ads in local newspapers next October to order ahead.
