The Worcester Chamber Music Society will perform its “Vienna Serenade” Sept. 25 at the Harvard Unitarian Church. The program consists of Beethoven’s “Serenade for flute, violin and viola;” Schumann’s “Märchenerzählungen for violin, clarinet and piano;” Schubert’s “Sonata in A Major for violin and piano;” and Mozart’s “Quintet in A for clarinet and strings.”
Tracy Kraus, a Harvard resident, the group’s executive director, and a talented flautist, spoke of the opportunity afforded by the Harvard Unitarian Universalist Church’s [UUC] performance space to present chamber music. “The intimate space at UUC is perfect for chamber music as it allows WCMS musicians to do what they do best, and that is to draw the audience into the performance,” she says.
Half-hour pre-concert talks, which provide the opportunity for concert-goers to interact with the musicians, are new for the 2009–2010 concert season. This provides an opportunity for interested parties of all ages to talk about music. “Kids are always encouraged at our events,” remarks principal violinist Krista Buckland Reisner.
The society provides educational outreach to communities where it performs. Bromfield is tentatively the site of a future open rehearsal, which will allow young Harvard musicians to experience a chamber music performance.
“The musicians of WCMS have played on many of the famous concert venues across the globe, ranging from America’s Carnegie and Jordan halls, to Europe’s Barbican and La Scala, as well as at festivals like Edinburgh and the Proms,” says Reisner. “However, as well-seasoned and well-traveled as we may be, what excites us now as performers is being able to really connect personally with our audiences … I know I can confidently speak for my colleagues at WCMS and say that we all like to know who we are playing for.”
Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors, $10 for students, and free for children younger than age 12. Tickets can be purchased online at WorcesterChamberMusic.org, by phone at 978-456-2730, or at the door.
