Now in her sixth year selling Girl Scout cookies for Troop 898, Cassandra Ostertag retains her title as the most successful salesperson the troop has ever seen, already beating last year’s personal best of 625 boxes. The soft-spoken sixth-grader with curly hair and a green vest full of badges said that the personal touch is important: going door-to-door selling cookies has been the key to her success. “And I always say ‘Thank you,’ ” she said.
Interviewed in the Bromfield cafeteria Tuesday, Ostertag pulled out sheet after sheet of completed order forms for cookies that she and mom Sue Ostertag will hand-deliver. Sue Ostertag is the troop’s “cookie mom,” the sale organizer and keeper of thousands of Thin Mints and Peanut Butter Patties in her garage. The two of them make a powerful sales team: Cassandra is in charge of direct sales and Sue keeps detailed records of who bought what cookies, and when. After many years of success with the sale, Cassandra now has a number of badges commemorating her success. She has also received a number of prizes for her efforts, including three stuffed bears and innumerable Girl Scout outfits. And she enjoys meeting people and chatting with them at booth sales and door-to-door calls, she said. “The people are always really nice.”
When asked how many sales she would expect to make if she asked 10 different people to buy, Cassandra quickly replied that all 10 would go home with some sort of cookie. “Unless they’re on a diet,” she added.
All the money from the cookie sale directly benefits the Girl Scout troops and their activities, Sue Ostertag pointed out. Cassandra said she is looking forward to an overnight trip to the Museum of Science at the end of March, but pointed out that the everyday activities that the troop does together are what she most enjoys. “It’s fun being with my friends making things and doing activities,” she said.
