After long hours of preparation and intense rehearsals, the Bromfield Drama Society presented Getting Out in a free performance for residents Tuesday, February 13. The play was performed to solicit constructive criticism from the audience before it is presented at the preliminary round of the Massachusetts High School Drama Festival Saturday, March 3, in Cronin Auditorium.
The play, written by Marsha Norman, depicts a young woman beginning a new life just after her release from prison. Arlene (Lily Narbonne) attempts to clean her slate by moving into an apartment previously owned by her sister. From the very beginning, however, it is apparent that Arlene’s past is not far behind her.
The multiple story lines in the play give the characters, especially Arlene, complex personalities. The eerie background ensemble, including two younger versions of Arlene (Rebecca Turner and Kelsey Marksteiner), serve as confusing voices in Arlene’s head. They constantly refresh her memories of adolescence and prison, tempting her to return to her old ways.
Carl (Jack Fellows), an escaped convict, proves to be another painful reminder of Arlene’s shameful history. Distraught at her inability to care for her son, Arlene seriously considers resuming her work prostituting for Carl. Fortunately, she has the friendly and witty Ruby (Katie Croyle) to help cancel out the voices of her past.
After the performance, the cast members and their director, Michael McGarty, fielded comments from the audience. Bromfield Drama Society alumni and other audience members gave suggestions for how the play could be improved. Ideas were given relating to the different characters’ ages, clothing, and props. Although there were some problems with lighting, the audience agreed that the set was well-built and creative. The cast and crew will continue to work on improving the play before the preliminary round of competition at the Drama Festival. Getting Out will also be performed for the Harvard Schools Trust Gala Saturday, March 24. For more information, visit the Harvard Community Theatre website at www.harvardtheatre.org.
