When Bob Kinnee called Jessie Peterson in August to tell her she had won the Lions Club Fall Festival logo design contest, no one was more surprised than the Bromfield eighth grader. Kinnee, who organized the contest with art teacher Sharon Chandler, said that Peterson’s entry was chosen from more than 300 submitted by middle school art students last spring. The watercolor design Peterson created inspired the poster that now decorates bulletin boards and public venues all around town, and features a graphic design of fireworks, musical notes, and fall leaves. The Fall Festival opens Saturday morning at 10 a.m., and runs all day until an evening concert and fireworks show. The festival continues on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Peterson, daughter of Eric and Betsy Peterson of East Bare Hill Road, was interviewed in full field hockey kit last Monday. Math is her favorite subject at school, the 13-year-old said, adding that she also enjoys drawing. It was fun to create the design, she added—and even more fun to win the $25 top prize. In addition to the prize money, Peterson and her family were awarded a complementary ticket to the Beatlejuice concert and fireworks Saturday evening. Capping it off, was a t-shirt with the festival design on it, too, she said.
The Lions Club Fall Festival is that organization’s biggest fundraising event and will feature a barbecue cookoff sponsored by the New England Barbecue Society, as well as numerous other food vendors. Representatives of town boards and organizations, as well as more than 75 crafters, will have tables throughout the grounds of Sunnywood Acres. Musician Robin Right and local band Blue Box Set will also perform at the festival, Kinnee said. For information, visit
