Summer at the Harvard Public Library

Children’s Programs

  • Circle of Songs with Hugh Hanley, for age 7 and younger, Wednesday, July 15, from 3 to 3:50 p.m.

    As an early-childhood educator, music specialist, and entertainer, Hanley has been singing with young children for more than 20 years. He will use a varied repertoire of songs, finger-plays, and musical activities that he has drawn from working with folk traditions, children, teachers, and parents. Pre-registration is requested.
     
  • The Magic of Bonaparte, for all ages, Tuesday, July 21, from 3 to 4 p.m.

    Called “Boston’s hottest magician,” Bonaparte will share his interactive style of magic with children of all ages. Pre-registration is requested.
     
  • Music Together with Alex Andrews, for age 5 and younger, Wednesday, July 22, at 3:45 p.m.

    This drop-in program will feature music and movement and a story with Alex Andrews of Apple Country Music Together.
     
  • Science Magic, for age 7 and older, Wednesday, July 29, from 3:15 to 3:45 p.m.

    Science Magic will investigate the science behind the magic of several classic magic tricks: how to snatch a tablecloth without disturbing the items on top, make a balloon fireproof, and use electromagnetism to defy gravity. For a grand finale, the educator will demonstrate how science can make it safe to lie down on a real bed of nails. Program content, geared toward school-age children and up, will include some loud noises. Pre-registration is requested.
     
  • Jim Cruise, The Spoon Man, for all ages, Wednesday, Aug. 5, from 4 to 4:45 p.m.

    The Spoon Man’s program contains several impressions, including Glen Miller and Elvis combining together, a heavy-metal spoon-player, and a rap spoon-player. The Spoon Man will have an audience sing-a-long competition and will create a “mountain band” out of members of the audience. Pre-registration is requested.

Family Movie Nights

  • Hotel for Dogs (PG), for all ages, Thursday, July 23, at 6:30 p.m.
  • Oliver and Company (G), for all ages, Thursday, Aug. 6, at 6:30 p.m.

Pre-registration is required for family movies.


Infant Story Time, Mother Goose on the Loose, Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m.

Mother Goose on the Loose is an early-literacy program that uses rhymes and songs to help children get ready for reading. It incorporates music, movement, ritual, repetition, positive reinforcement, developmental tips, nursery rhymes, illustrations, puppets, musical instruments, colored scarves, and book reading into a 30-minute session for infants to 2-year-olds and their caregivers. No sign-up is required.


Toddler Story Time, Mondays at 10:30 a.m.

Toddler story time is an interactive, theme-based, 30-minute program that include songs, simple stories, felt-board stories, creative dramatics, and finger plays that are appropriate for toddlers ages 2 and 3 years old. Limited to 10 children and their caregivers per time slot; pre-registration is required.


Preschool/Kindergarten Story Time, Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.

The 30- to 45-minute program consists of a mix of quiet and interactive stories, songs, and finger plays, with three special activities that rotate weekly: story-telling with guest visits from the library’s puppets; felt-board stories; and art projects that encourage preschoolers to explore art materials, colors, shapes, and their own creativity. Appropriate for children ages 4 to 7 and their caregivers. No sign-up is required.


Pajama Story Time, for ages 4 to 7, Mondays at 6:30 p.m.

Children are invited to come in their pajamas to this 30-minute, story-time evening of theme-based stories, songs, and finger plays. No sign-up is required.


Book Groups

Bagels n’ Books groups will each meet once over the summer. New members are always welcome; pre-registration is requested.

  • Third grade: Monday, July 20, 4 p.m.
  • Fourth grade: Friday, July 10, 4 p.m.
  • Fifth grade: Tuesday, July 14, 4 p.m.
  • Sixth grade: Tuesday, July 28, 4 p.m.
  • Grades 7 to 9: Tuesday, Aug. 4, 4:30 p.m.

Adult Programs

Thursday Night at the Movies – age 13 and older

  • Confessions of a Shopaholic (PG), Thursday, July 16, at 7 p.m.
  • Mamma Mia! Sing-a-long (PG-13), Thursday, July 30, at 7 p.m.
  • Jaws (PG), Thursday, Aug. 13, at 7 p.m.

The library will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays during July and August. Hours of operation on Monday through Thursday remain unchanged. The library is closed Fridays and Sundays. To register for children’s programs call the Children’s Room at 978-456-2381. For information on adult programs call the reference desk at 978-456-4114.
