The town caucus is coming up Feb. 2, and there are many slots to be filled. If you are considering throwing your hat into the ring, here are some things to know about the open positions:
Cemetery Commission: The three members of the Cemetery Commission are responsible for the care and management of all public burial grounds. Commissioners are elected to three-year, staggered terms and are granted the ability to make any regulation regarding cemeteries consistent with the law, contingent upon town approval. This year there is one three-year position open. Commissioners meet monthly, on the first Monday of the month at 3 p.m., in the Bellevue Cemetery office.
Community Preservation Committee: This group is made up of nine members, four of whom are elected, and five of whom are appointees representing the Historical Commission, the Park and Recreation Commission, the Conservation Commission, the Housing Authority, and the Planning Board. The committee makes recommendations to the selectmen for the acquisition, creation, preservation, and rehabilitation of open space, historic resources, recreational land, and community housing. The group meets on the second Thursday of the month at 8 p.m. in the Town Hall meeting room. The committee has three positions open this year: two three-year positions and one one-year position.
Board of Health: This three-member board is responsible for the approval and monitoring of wells and septic systems, monitoring the water at the town beach, and supervision of the town nurses. Like the Planning Board, members are elected to staggered three-year terms. The Nashoba Associated Boards of Health acts as agent of the Board of Health in sanitary matters. This year the board has one three-year position open. The Board of Health meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at 7:30 p.m. in the Town Hall meeting room.
Moderator: The moderator presides over and regulates the proceedings at town meetings, deciding questions of order and publicly declaring votes. The moderator appoints the members of the Finance Committee and is elected annually.
Parks and Recreation Commission: This group is charged with the direction of town recreational activities, including summer and winter recreational programs, oversight of the Common, the town beach and playing fields, and the hiring of lifeguards and other safety personnel. The commission authorizes signs posted on the Common. This year the commission has openings for two three-year positions and one one-year position. It meets the first and third Mondays of the month, at 7:30 p.m. in the Hapgood Room, at the old library.
Planning Board: The five members of this board, who serve staggered three-year terms, grant control of the subdivision of land, hear proposals, and recommend zoning bylaws for Town Meeting. The board may appoint subcommittees to address particular issues, such as the Wind Energy Systems Conversion Task Force. This year there are two three-year positions open on the Planning Board. The board meets at 7:30 p.m. on the first and third Mondays of the month in the Town Hall meeting room.
School Committee: This board, which consists of five members, is responsible for establishing policy for the school system. The committee sets policies concerning hiring of personnel, wages, and curriculum, acting on the recommendations of the superintendent, and is responsible for hiring and evaluating the superintendent. Members serve three-year staggered terms. This year there are three slots open on the committee: two three-year positions and one one-year position. The School Committee meets on the second and fourth Mondays of the month at 7 p.m., in the Town Hall meeting room.
Board of Selectmen: This board is made up of five members who serve staggered three-year terms. This year there are two three-year positions and one one-year position open. The selectmen act as the town’s executive branch, responsible for all areas of local government not specifically controlled by other town officials. The board exercises its authority either directly or through the agencies and officers under its control. It oversees the Police, Fire, Ambulance, and Public Works departments and serves as the town’s licensing authority. The board meets on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at 7:30 p.m., in the Town Hall meeting room.
Water Commission: The three members, elected on a staggered three-year basis, are charged with economically and efficiently providing water to the buildings in the center of town. The commission is responsible for obtaining state and federal funding for water construction and recommending water-related projects and contracts. This year there is one open position, for a three-year term.
