Library Book Sale

The Friends of the Harvard Public Library will hold their Annual Book Sale, their main fundraising event, at the old library beginning the weekend of May 11.

  • Friday, May 11: Preview Sale for Friends of the Library (available to Harvard residents) from 6 to 8 p.m.
  • Saturday, May 12: Early Bird Admission 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., $10 per person; free admission from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Sunday, May 13: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., free admission. Buy Mom a book.
  • Saturday, May 19: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., last chance.

Bromfield Drama Society presents "Bye Bye Birdie"

The Bromfield Drama Society will present the classic musical, "Bye Bye Birdie," Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, May 10, 11, and 12, at 7:30 p.m. in Cronin Auditorium. Based loosely on Elvis Presley's induction in the U. S. Army, the story follows the adventures of Conrad Birdie (Jake Turchetta), his manager Albert Peterson (Tyler Borton), Albert's assistant Rose Alvarez (Emma Noyes), and the MacAfee family (Daniel Jackson, Sara Brown, Stacey Fair, and Xavier Neang). If losing his star performer to the Army isn't bad enough, Albert also must contend with his overbearing mother (Emma Raymond) and the jealous boyfriend, Hugo Peabody (Benjamin Jackson). The performance will be accompanied by a 16-piece orchestra composed of professional and student musicians and coordinated by Thomas Reynolds. Tickets for the show, $15 for adults and $10 for students/seniors, are available at the door.


Jessie Day 5K

The third annual Have a Jessie Day 5K will be held Saturday, May 12, at 9 a.m. (rain or shine). For more information visit www.haveajessieday.com.


Apple Blossom Festival

The annual Apple Blossom Festival, the Rotary Club's biggest charity fundraiser, will enliven the Harvard Common Saturday, May 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with live music, food, children's games, fire truck rides, and craft vendors. The festival will be followed by the annual Ducky Wucky River Race at 4:30 p.m.


Hildreth House Porch Sale

The Friends of the Council on Aging will hold a Porch Sale at Hildreth House Saturday, May 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will raise seed money for a planned fundraising drive to support the expansion of Hildreth House. Toys, games, and an array of collectibles and other treasures will be up for grabs. There will be live music, refreshments, and a bird's eye view of the Apple Blossom Festival. Take a short walk up from the Common, do some shopping, and support the Council on Aging.


Lego Club

The Harvard Public Library will host Lego Club for ages 5 and up Saturday, May 12, from 1:30 to 3 p.m., to build Lego creations with other Harvard Lego fans. Parents are encouraged to join in the fun and assist with supervision. See the Children's librarian for more information and to preregister.


Fruitlands Auction

A flight on a classic WWII aircraft and a private recital and behind-the-scenes flute facility tour are just two of the many items up for bid at Fruitlands Museum's auction Saturday, May 12. The evening event, which starts at 6:30 p.m., includes dinner, dancing, bidding, and entertainment from guest auctioneer, the "Knight of Toasting," Sir Jeremy Bell. Tickets are $75 per person, or $560 for a table of 8, and can be purchased by calling 978-456-3924, ext. 289.


Mom's the Word at Fruitlands

Fruitlands Museum will offer moms free admission to the museum Mother's Day, Sunday, May 13. Brunch reservations at the new Fruitlands Cafe can be made by calling 978-456-3923, ext. 242.

Artist Linda Hoffman will be on hand from 1 to 3 p.m. as the museum bids farewell to her Zen Dust exhibit. Hoffman will give a brief talk at 2 p.m. followed by a question-and-answer session. Light refreshments will be served.


Healing Garden Concert

The Virginia Thurston Healing Garden will host a Mother's Day concert with musician and actor Stan Strickland Sunday, May 13, at 3 p.m. at 145 Bolton Road. Strickland, a saxophonist, flutist, and actor, has opened for jazz greats Miles Davis and Sonny Rollins, was a featured soloist with Take Six and the Boston Pops at Symphony Hall, and has performed at the Sundance Film Festival. Admission at the door is $10 for Garden members, $15 for nonmembers. All donations directly benefit the services of the Healing Garden. Well Adult Clinic

Nashoba Associated Boards of Health, in conjunction with the Harvard Board of Health, will hold a Well Adult Clinic Tuesday, May 15, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Hildreth House. Drop in for blood pressure reading, pulse screening, and diet teaching. No appointment is necessary. Look Good ... Feel Better

The Virginia Thurston Healing Garden will host the American Cancer Society's Look Good...Feel Better program Wednesday, May 16, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 145 Bolton Road. The free program teaches cancer patients hands-on cosmetic techniques to help them cope with appearance-related side effects from chemotherapy and/or radiation treatments. Wig care, scarf and hat use, skin care, and nail care will all be discussed. All participants will receive a free makeup kit. Celebration Open House

The Bromfield Prom will be held Friday, May 18, and the annual alcohol-free, all-night Celebration party will follow. The community is invited to an Open House from 9 to 10 p.m. to see the transformation from school to Celebration wonderland created by hundreds of volunteers and supporters to keep students safe and entertained. Guaranteed to be amazing.


Just 'Cause We Can Walk

The Virginia Thurston Healing Garden will hold its Just 'Cause 3.5 mile walk Saturday, May 19, beginning at the garden at 145 Bolton Road. Check-in time and registration is 7 a.m. and the walk will start at 8 a.m. The registration fee is $25 per person with a $100 cap per family. 100 percent of the funds raised will go directly to the support of local women with cancer, regardless of financial barriers. Garden Club Plant Sale

The 57th annual Garden Club of Harvard plant sale will be held Saturday, May 19, 9 a.m. to noon on the Common, rain or shine. Proceeds from the sale support the club's many projects and service programs.


Armed Forces Day at the Fort Devens Museum

Fort Devens Museum will hold an open house Saturday, May 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to observe Armed Forces Day with exhibits, talks, and an opportunity to share conversation about the military and local history over refreshments. Guest speaker talks throughout the day will include: The Korean War, 11 a.m.; Patches and Insignia, noon; Archaeology at Fort Devens, 1 p.m.; and WWI and WWII barracks at Fort Devens, 2 p.m. The program is free and open to the public. The museum is located on the third floor at 94 Jackson Road in Devens. Signs and balloons will lead to the parking area. Girl Scout Parent-Daughter Dance

The Harvard Girl Scouts will hold their Annual Parent-Daughter Dance Saturday, May 19, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Harvard Congregational Church Fellowship Hall. DJ Police Chief Denmark will provide the music. There will be crafts, refreshments, and a Girl Scout patch for all. The dance is $5 per person with a $15 family cap.

Brigitte Desautels Art Exhibit

An artist's reception for Harvard artist Brigitte Livet Desautels will be held Thursday, May 17, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at the Wheelhouse Artspace at 33 Bradford St. in West Concord. Desautels' work at the exhibit includes oil paintings, mix media, collage, giclee prints, and raku.


Backyard Gardens

Groton Local will pull together some of the area's most experienced food gardeners for an educational presentation, "Backyard Gardens: To Grow and What to Grow, That Is the Question," Thursday, May 17, at 7 p.m. at Nashua River Watershed Association headquarters at 592 Main St. in Groton. Groton Grange Barn Dance

Groton Grange will present its Spring Family Barn Dance Saturday, May 19, from 7:30 to 10 p.m. The evening of dancing will include live music by Groton's own Contra Banditos.
