Thursday entertainment at Devens Grill

Every Thursday local musicians will perform at Devens Grill, 4 Ryans Way in Devens, from 7 to 10 p.m. There is no cover charge. The next performance is July 10 with Steve Hurl playing original contemporary folk mixed with traditional blues and other styles of American roots music.

Concert series at Fruitlands

Each Thursday evening in July, music director Dr. William G. McManus and the Concord Band will present a musical program to delight audiences of all ages. Concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. each Thursday through July 31. (Gates open at 6 p.m.) Admission is $12 per car ($10 for members), with parking on the grounds. Handicapped-accessible. Call the Concord Band ticketline at 978-897-9969 for more details each week. Pack a picnic, or plan to visit the refreshment center on the grounds. The concert schedule is as follows:

July 10: To mark the 100th anniversary of his birth, the band will present A Salute to Leroy Anderson, complete with “Trumpeter’s Lullaby”, “Belle of the Ball”, and even a “Sleigh Ride” in July.

July 17: Jazz vocalist Amanda Carr will join the band for The Great American Songbook to celebrate George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, and other all-time great American songwriters.

July 24: The Music of John Williams features everyone’s favorite movie themes, from Star Wars to Raiders of the Lost Ark.

July 31: A Summer Retrospective, recapping the highlights and favorites from all the summer programs. (7/4)

Exhibit at the General Store

The Harvard General Store will present a For Art’s Sake exhibit, courtesy of the Clark Gallery in Lincoln, through Sept. 12. The exhibit, A Year of Looking at My Stuff, will feature paintings by Lexington artist Gail Martin, who examines desire and its manifestations through contemplation and observation of her own possessions. The 365 paintings in the exhibit will be available for viewing on the second floor of the General Store Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 10 to 2 p.m. and Thursdays from 3 to 7 p.m.
 

OUT OF TOWN  

Tour and tea with Catherine the Great

Visitors to the Museum of Russian Icons in Clinton can meet Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia, July 23 at 3 p.m. Guests can join the empress (portrayed by Norah Kyle) for a tour of the collection, enjoy a cup of tea, and receive a royal proclamation signed by the empress herself. ShirleyFest benefit concert

The Shirley Local Partner Committee of Habitat for Humanity will host ShirleyFest, a rockin’ benefit of music and community, Saturday, July 26, from noon to 5 p.m. at Benjamin Hill Park, 93 Benjamin Road in Shirley.

The event will feature Bill Kirchen, with special guests The Installers. Also performing is The Matt Zeiner Band, Danielle Miraglia and Tom Bianchi, Ashbrook Haynes Band and early bird attraction Chris Reddy. Master of ceremonies will be Carter Allen, from WZLX’s “Sunday Morning Blues.”

Guests can enjoy barbecue, burgers, franks, chicken, and more provided by The Devens Grill, Piccolino Restaurant, Phoenix Bar & Grill, Brothers in Smoke, Ayer Rotary, and more, as well as micro-brews from Harpoon Brewery, Gardner Ale House, Berkshire Brewing Co., Mayflower Brewing and more.

Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at City Music, Leominster, Keystone Properties in Shirley, or online at shirleyfest.com. Tickets include 10 1-ounce tastings or three 12-ounce nonalcoholic drinks. Children younger than 12 are admitted free with paid adult admission. This event is blanket-seating. Food and beverage may not be brought into the festival.

All proceeds will benefit the Shirley Local Partner Committee of Habitat for Humanity, North Central Mass. to build a Habitat home in Shirley.

Beyond Twilight walks

The Thoreau Society, 55 Old Bedford Road in Concord, announces its Beyond Twilight walks:

Saturdays and Sundays at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.: An American Odyssey—Explore Concord’s Revolutionary and literary paths.

Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m.: Spirits, Legends, and Lore—Take an evening walk into Concord’s past, unknown, and the paranormal.

Walks begin at Old Hill burying ground. Reservations required; call 978-269-4237. Cost: adults, $15; seniors, $12; children younger than 16, $10; children age 6 and younger, free; family maximum, $45. All tours can be scheduled at a time of your convenience for four or more. Group discounts are available.
