Three Local Tastes

It’s been nine days since I wrote the following post, and already the grapes are passing. I hope it’s not too late. But getting the @!!*& photo of the grapes out of my camera took me a while, for some reason. Too busy with a cool new project at work, which maybe I’ll tell you about sometime.

But to cast my mind back to September 10, here’s a quick summary of some memorable delicious tastes I recounted during the twenty-four hours preceding my writing.

  1. Mussels from the Quarterdeck (via the Harvard General Store’s “Fishmail”), cooked per instructions in the worthwhile book Tomato by Lawrence Davis-Hollander, currently available at Westward Orchards. It’s a typically easy mussel recipe, with the notable addition of chopped tomatoes from the garden, which are in their precious last days. I off-roaded a bit and added potatoes from a friend’s garden. Bliss! (Figuratively, not “bliss potatoes.”) I’m in a groove of making mussels every couple weeks. So easy, so yummy and fun. I love Fishmail!
     
  2. Joanna’s New World Biscotti “Chocolate a Quattro” from the Harvard Farmer’s Market. Just the thing to go with a cappuccino from the General Store. Worth straying from the diet, for these….
     
  3. Wild grapes from the backyard. Wild grapes are my second favorite weed, next to wild raspberries. Yet another year has passed when I never got around to pickling their leaves. Next year, I hope. For now, though, I’m enjoying nibbling on a bowl of them at my desk. They are so sour and so weird, each one is a tiny little adventure!

I hope you can still find some.

Your blog has made me realize that I no longer smell wild grapes this time of year, now that our neighbor has cleared the land across the street. A little bit of fall is gone!

Grow your own! I had good luck transplanting a couple vines by digging them up and moving them to a part of the yard. They fruit more and more every year. Such a great smell.

Hi Jonathan,

I just found your mention, and I want to thank you for the kind words! So pleased you enjoyed the Quattro (Four Chocolates). Stop by on Saturday 10/29 and try the new Dark Chocolate & Mint if you can.

Also, this Saturday is the last day of the 2011 Harvard Farmer's Market. Many people dress up for Halloween -- great town spirit. My husband and I will be...you guessed it...bakers! Complete with the Chef Boyardee hats. FYI, I'm doing a last day "2-Fer" special. My way to say thank you to everyone who supported me throughout the season.

The Harvard Farmer's Market was my very first market in 2010 when I launched the business. My husband and I really enjoy being there, and the market managers are the best. We've made many friends and even know our fair share of dogs by name too :).
