Sunday, 11/19 at 4:00 PM, the S.N.O.B. film festival in Concord NH will be premiering a film by Christopher Maloney about the Shakers, including some footage of Harvard Shaker Village, and apparently some footage of me hopefully not giving too much misinformation about this topic.

The director's description:
Several weeks after moving to Massachusetts, I happened to take a walk through the Shaker Cemetery of Harvard. I was struck by the unique shapes of the iron markers and perplexed by the ages engraved upon them. Though the cemetery had not received any bodies since 1918, the ages showed that the Shakers were living into their 70s, 80s, 90s, and beyond at a time when the rest of the country was living to about 40. I wondered what secret the Shakers must have stumbled upon to give them such long life and how I could learn about this secret. This led to an exploration of the Harvard Shakers in a documentary film I directed called Come, Thou Fount: Thoughts on the Shakers. In it their longevity is discussed, along with examinations of bizarre worship behavior, alleged drug use, and the fabled Shaker Fountain of Youth, said to be the source of their impressive life spans. The film collects the opinions of writers and historians through a number of interviews, leading to an exclusive interview with the last remaining Shakers on earth. Come Thou Fount offers a look at the Shakers through an outsider's view ”my view”and gives them a depth often not encountered in traditional histories. The Shakers are explored beyond their furniture, architecture, or seeds. They are observed for who they were, are, and will be in days to come.
