This past weekend were pleased to discover that our tomatoes do not appear to have suffered from the late tomato blight that has apparently been attacking gardens in the NorthEast.   Tomato I think the cause of this recent attack is the cool and rainy weather that we've been ha... Read More
A few weeks ago a new creature entered our lives.  He was sitting on our doorstep when we came home, humming to himself and smoking a pipe, and he said that his name was Clarence.  After much encouragement, I convinced him to stay in our house as a guest.  But the barking dogs must have turned him off because he disappeared after a day or two. ... On Saturday morning we were doing our weekend morning yoga workout with Rodney Yee when the dogs announced a car pulling into the driveway. Out of the car bounded Jim Phelan with his ever-happy face and a magazine called Fine Gardening, which he had bought us, a magazine written for exactly people such as us.  The cover article was "100 Skills to Make you a Bett... When I go to work, I focus on my job, and that's pretty much it.  Except for brief coffee room banter regarding someone's latest plumbing catastrophe or kid's soccer game, I barely know the personal lives of even people that I've worked with for years and years. I tend to carry that same efficient attitude into my personal life.  I'm not one for idle chit-c... Read More

As 2008 began, the long-term outlook for the Press was promising. Subscription renewals were coming in (many for two years), advertising revenue was growing, and reporters were covering the news as boards prepared for Town Meeting. The financial picture was positive, even though we were forecasting another year or two of deficits.

We took a planned break in July and early August, with no paper published for four weeks. We moved into our new space before we left. When we returned, we began a period of change.

Here's a silly story that I wrote about gnomes.  Donella, my dear niece, has requested that I post it.  So at the risk of being scorned and doomed to the world of Harvard-rejected-writers hell, I will post it. The night started off sleeplessly, my mind filled with the typical worries we often busy our minds with.  After getting up and down, and wa... Read More
For the past two weeks I've been craving and struggling and whining to myself that I wanted to write a cute gnome story about the garden.  After writing and writing, ripping up, meditating, walking, writing, ripping up and tearing my hair out, this morning and I got up and had to concede that a gnome story just isn't going to happen any time soon. I find myself ... Read More

During the winter and early spring of 2007, we focused on strengthening the paper's content. We had welcome help from two former editors of the old Harvard Post, Ann Levison and Connie Larrabee.

Tomatoes are a huge thing in our family.  The tomatoes that John and I grew ten years ago died frightful deaths in spite of our spending at least twenty minutes a day lovingly flooding them with water.   One of the first things my mother asked for when she arrived at our house a few months ago was "Where can I plant a tomato plant?".  John has alwa... In 1973, a locally owned independent weekly newspaper, the Harvard Post, was started by Kathleen Cushman and Ed Miller (authors of How to Produce a Small Newspaper, Harvard Common Press, 1978) with a goal of “bringing the community together while reflecting the individualism that makes Harvard so special.”

Last Saturday, May 9, 2009, we (Joe D'eramo, Jim Phelan, John Martin and his son Jared, Steve Abrams, Carolena McCauley, Sharon McCullough, my husband John and I) dredged the spring and installed the water pump in preparation for the upcoming growing season.  It was a mild but overcast day and the air smelled of rain, so I packed my raincoat.  We donned appr... Hello, my name is Katy Sharko. I'll bet you're wondering what I'm doing here. After all, I'm wondering the same thing myself. I've never grown an edible thing in my entire life, unless you count the sickly handful of tomato plants my husband John and I planted 10 years ago that eventually were consumed by the tomato blight that plagued them. I'll be completely honest... Read More
